Do you have an SQL server? Read this… the greatest new malware to affect your server!

Cybersecurity researchers have found Maggie, a new malware that is targeting Microsoft SQL servers by backdooring them. Current estimates are that Maggie has infected hundreds of machines worldwide, including the United States.

DCSO CyTec analysts say they have identified over 285 servers infected with Maggie across 42 countries to date.

The program utilizes SQL queries that run commands and interact with computer files to brute force administrator logins. Estimates show it runs over 51 commands including executing programs, interacting with files, querying system information, enabling Remote Desktop services, enabling port forwarding, and running proxies.

Cyberattackers are able to control the commands to Maggie, and if password collection is successful, can hard code a backdoor into those computer servers for future access. The malware is extremely stealthy as well, cyberanalysts say.

“The implementation enables port reuse, making the redirection transparent to authorized users, while any other connecting IP is able to use the server without any interference or knowledge of Maggie.”

Researchers are currently unaware of who is behind the Maggie malware attack or what their objectives might be. Cybersecurity experts continue to stress implementing proper cyber security procedures and securities across all devices.
